Talks at Professional Meetings

Relatively short, 15-30 minute talk with computer slide presentation, followed by a 1 to 5 minute-long question and answer session with audience.

The idea of the presentation is submitted in the form of an abstract, which is a 200-300 word summary of the research, months before the meeting takes place. An abstract presents the main points of the research (What, Who, Where, Why, and How) and the key findings, including supporting evidence. The abstracts are reviewed and organized into thematic sessions at the conference.

Poster presentations are informal, interactive displays of the research. The author is usually, but not necessarily, present and available for questions or leads a discussion with those attendance. The authors stands next to the poster over a period of 1-2 hours and engages anyone who happens to visit the poster, which tacked to a vertical bulletin board. There may also be a table with a computer, allowing enhanced scientific visualization of the research findings. Abstracts are also submitted for poster presentations, which are reviewed and organized into thematic sessions at the conference.

Paper Example
Publlshed Article in Peer-reviewed Scientific Journal

The results of the research are ultimately submitted for publication in a scientific journal. The submitted manuscript begins with an abstract, following the title of the article and list of authors, and is written in a style format that is defined by the guidelines of the journal. The manuscript includes a narrative, figurse with descriptive captions, and a bibliography, which lists references to previous studies in the same field that have been cited in the article.

Once submitted to the journal, the manuscript is sent out for peer review, after which it can be accepted for publication, returned to the author for modification prior to acceptance for publication, or rejected.

Now that you have completed your research of NanTroSEIZE in 3-D, it is time to submit an abstract to present your work at a professional conference, such as the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

Your Assignment is to write a 250-300 word professional quality abstract, which is a summary of your research, and should contain all information necessary for the reader to determine:

(1) Title and lead author's name (not included in word count)
(2) the objectives of the study;
(3) the study method(s) used to address the objectives;
(4) data analysis methods,
(5) interpretation of the data and,
(6) results obtained from study and their the significance.

Frequently, readers of a scientific journal will only read the abstract, choosing to read at length those papers that are most interesting to them. For this reason, and because abstracts are frequently made available to scientists by various computer abstracting services, this section should be written carefully and succinctly to have the greatest impact in as few words as possible.
